I got word about a scholarship this weekend so I wanted to share some more of the details with the readers and anyone who is surfing in from the search engines.

This scholarship is for students who use wheelchairs – manual or electric – and its sponsored by AmeriGlide, a supplier and distributor of all sorts of home mobility products like ramps, stairlifts, and other types of wheelchair lifts.

Full information about the wheelchair scholarship program (click here)

Applications are due on January 2, 2009 and can be completed online or downloaded, filled out, and mailed in.  Students applying must also complete a 500 word essay explained at the scholarship information page.

Winners are announced in March of 2009, but you can start applying now in 2008 (in fact, you’ll need to get working on it if you’re eligible because you’ve really just got November and December left to work on it!)

Thanks to Ameriglide for running such a great scholarship program, and I’d also like to thank them for bringing it to my attention so I can pass the word along.  If you have any questions, please check out the links provided here.

Oh, and good luck!

  2. This seems like a great way to give to children who are in need. People in wheel chair have so many things taken away from them and this is a way to give back a little.

  4. Good blog. It makes since for a company to help people who understand their products. In this case, giving a scholarship away starts a conversation between the school, the person in the wheelchair and the company that supplies products to meet the needs of those who in wheelchairs.

  5. Tenacious, vitality and determination describe my moral fiber. One main factor that has lead to my strong moral fiber is my parent’s perseverance and determination to help me succeed. Neither my grandparents, nor my parents graduated college; I would be the first in my family to graduate from college. As a young child I would always remember my parents telling me, “You could achieve anything that you set your mind to do and to never give up.” As I grow older, experience new things and overcome challenges, I have really learned to take those words to heart.
My demeanor as a young adult is different from my demeanor as a child. I was born a twin and my twin did not survive. I was born with Cerebral Palsy and although I have overcome a lot of obstacles it has definitely been a struggle. As a child I had low self-esteem when it came to interacting with my peers. I didn’t understand why I couldn’t ride a bike or roller blade like the other kids my age. When I became a teenager, I understood my condition and how it affects my body. I am unable to walk on my own; therefore, I walk with a walker for short distances. I have a scooter that I use on a daily basis for school. Overall, the challenges I’ve had to overcome really have shaped me into the person I am today.
I have had to endure three surgeries for my legs; therefore, doctors and equipment have been part of my life since day one. Learning how to do day to day activities like, walking, showering, getting something to eat or getting up from the floor when I fall, are everyday things that people take for granted. I have faced these day to day obstacles but I have never let it get me down. I have come to the realization that I could let my Cerebral Palsy control me or I could control my Cerebral Palsy. I have taken control of my Cerebral Palsy by making sure that I take proper care of my body. I go to therapy once a week and make sure to challenge myself with new everyday activities. I am now able to accomplish daily tasks that I could not do before.
I am a student at Taravella High School with a core GPA of 3.8. I am in all honors and Advance placement courses and have been a member of the National Society of High School Scholars for the past 3 years. My goal is to attend a University that can fulfill my future goals as a Forensic Psychologist. My mother is a single mother and carries the burden of all the bills and my well being on her own. I want to make her proud and assure that my future does not come with as many trials and tribulations as she has had.
I think that having Cerebral Palsy has really benefited me more than hurt me. What I have not been able to do with my legs, I have made up for by using my mind. My mind is valuable because it has infinite capabilities. I value my mind more than my legs because I believe there are no limits or boundaries to what I can think and imagine. My mind can take me places I have never been, with my mind I can run and even fly. In the end, despite the fact that cerebral palsy is hard to live with I will never feel sorry for myself or allow anyone to feel sorry for me because it would not be true to who I am today.
Please consider me for a candidate for a scholarship. Thank you in advance. Zina Nau
