It might seem like the odds are stacked against you and you have no chance to actually win the scholarships and grants you need to help you pay your bills. Well, its true that the odds of winning any particular award you apply for are generally pretty low, but its an absolute fact that your odds are exactly zero if you don’t put in the time and effort that it takes to apply!
How many applicants get scholarships?
For every scholarship that is awarded there are usually about another fifteen or twenty applicants who will not receive funding for that particular award. Instead of being discouraged by this fact, we should reflect on the opportunity of it and the way odds will scale if you manage to apply for one or two scholarship programs every month for the years leading up to college and the years you’re enrolled in university. With a persistent effort aimed at acquiring free money through scholarships and grants, you can drastically improve your chance of being selected.
Increase the odds of winning that scholarship
The best way to improve your odds per program is to focus exclusively on scholarships that match your personal student profile. However, that isn’t always an option – especially if you’re constantly being reminded how average your life story seems in the big picture. When you go back to the statistical approach, it only makes sense that the majority of students would fit the profile of “average.” Then again, we all have some kind of hobbies or interests that make us a bit different – and although we’re taught to not dwell on these differences they can make a big difference when you’re applying to various scholarship programs.
To offset extreme selectivity, it is also a good idea to enter as many contests, raffles, and drawings as you can. These might have even lower than average odds of selection, but everyone is eligible and applications can usually be completed in a short time.
Not every scholarship is worth the application
Now remember, the fact that you can’t win without applying goes both ways. If you receive some kind of notification about winning awards you never signed up for, you should be immediately skeptical and aware of the signs of a scholarship scam before getting caught up in something that could drain you of time, money, and sanity.
When you’re ready to stop making excuses and start making money, all you need to do to get started is take an inventory of the scholarships you’re eligible for, then Find Free College Money!

I just think scholarships are a waste of time. I’m about to start my 4th year at a university, and right now I just saw “Whatever!” to scholarships! Why do they all have to be essays? I’m in college! I have enough essays to write for class!

Best tip ever! Apply for as many scholarships as possible even though you may not meet 100% of the criteria.
